University of Rochester’s Sloan Performing Arts Center opened its doors in Fall 2021. Housing the 180-seat Smith Theater, Scene shop, Costume shop, Prop shop, Conditioning Lab, Green Room, Dressing Rooms, and more, it serves the UR International Theatre Program, the Program of Dance and Movement and the Satz College Music Department, and the campus at large.

  • Entrance doors have at least 32” of clear opening and can be opened with 5 pounds or less pressure
  • At least 18” of clear wall on the pull side of door, next to handle
  • Threshold edge is accessible at less than 1/4”
  • Door handle no higher than 48” and can be opened with closed fist

Rooms and Spaces

  • Aisles and pathways to materials and services at least 36” wide
  • 18” clearance when using double door
  • 5’ circle or T-shaped spaces for turning wheelchair completely
  • Obstacles are cane-detectable in circulation paths through public areas

Seats, Tables, and Counters

  • No fixed seating
  • All seating on risers—ground seating accessible in front row/rows
  • Companion seating available (padded chairs)
  • Counters have unobstructed space in front that measures 56” x 48” and not higher than 36”
  • Items such as straws, napkins, etc. easily accessible on counter
  • Water fountain not higher than 36” and operable with closed fist - clear knee space

Elevator

  • All public elevators accessible by elevator
  • Call button no higher than 42”
  • Car controls no higher than 48” with emergency controls no higher than 35”
  • 60” diameter circle for t-turn with shut doors
  • Hoist way signs at both jambs with braille at between 48” and 60”
  • No audible tones to note current floor
  • Visual cues on elevator indicating floor and direction


Restrooms

  • Accessible restrooms
  • Pictograms used to identify restrooms
  • All restroom doors equipped with accessible handles
  • Adequate maneuvering space for a person using a wheelchair (6.5’)
  • 36” wide path to all fixtures
  • Stall doors operable with closed fist
  • Grab bars behind and on the side of wall nearest to the toilet
  • Toilet seat less than 19” high
  • Faucet operable with closed fist
  • Soap and paper towel dispensers not higher than 44”
  • Doorway to restroom is at least 32” clear
