Accessible Approach/Entrance

  • Entrance at ground level with no barriers and rubber, non-slip mat from the gate to the door
  • Route of travel is slip resistant and at least 36” wide
  • Objects can be detected by person with visual disability using a cane
  • Curb cuts on route at parking and drop-offs

Parking and Drop-Off Areas

  • Parking lot with 11 spaces near entrance – flat access to the building but none with specific accessible designation
  • Van accessible for drop-off near the entrance
  • No parking on State Street so closest parking with accessible spaces in the High Falls Garage (240 State Street – next to WXXI)
    • Entrances located on State Street and Mill Street
    • Drop off with accessible path for paratransit users from either entrance
    • Vehicle overhead clearance at entrance
      • Ground level: 9’0” (96 inches) clearance
      • All upper levels: 7’0” (84 inches) clearance - less than the 98” vertical clearance for lift-equipped vans
    • Handicap spaces located on levels 1 and 2

      • Level 1
        • Six (6) accessible spaces closer to the Mill Street entrance - access aisles for van accessible spaces marked with hash marks
      • Level 2

        • Two (2) accessible spaces on the State Street side and four (4) accessible spaces on the Mill Street side
        • None of the spaces have access aisles with hash marks for vans
    • Two (2) elevators – one located on State Street side (southwest corner) and one on Mill Street side (northeast corner)

      • Elevators access all seven (7) floors in case none of the accessibility spaces on Levels 1 and 2 are available
    • Accessible spaces marked with International Symbol of Accessibility


  • Main entrance is accessible (small, low-grade ramp with 1:24 ratio)
  • Main entrance door has at least 32” of clear opening with at least 18” of clear wall on the pull side of the door next to handle
  • Threshold edge is accessible (1/4” high or less)
  • Door handle no higher than 48” and can be opened with closed fist

Rooms and Spaces

  • Aisles and pathways to materials and services at least 36” wide
  • 5’ space for turning a wheelchair completely
  • Obstacles are cane-detectable in circulation paths through public areas

Seats, Tables, and Counters

  • No fixed seating so space wide enough for wheelchairs throughout
  • Counter/table accessible with 36” wide section
  • Accessible space in front of counter/table with free space no less than 30” x 46”


  • No elevator - venue has only one level


  • Fully accessible restrooms
  • Doorway to restroom is at least 32” clear with accessible handles operable with a closed fist and less than 48” high
  • Adequate maneuvering space for a person using a wheelchair (at least 5’ x 5’ clear of door swing)
  • 36” wide path to all fixtures
  • Accessible stall with grab bars behind and on the side of wall nearest to the toilet
  • Stall door operable with a closed fist
  • Toilet seat 18” high
  • Faucet operable with closed fist
  • Paper towel dispenser at 50”
