The Woman King

Waiting for Guffman

We all miss the natural wit of comedy icon Catherine O’Hara, who died in January, but thankfully it is preserved for us in her films and TV shows. This improv mockumentary is one of her showcase films. O’Hara portrays the lead actress in a community theatre production. Egos and eccentricities abound, and the all-star ensemble–among them O’Hara, Eugene Levy, Fred Willard, and Parker Posey–perfectly captures the hopes of hometown thespians.

Beatriz at Dinner

Fans of Mike White, the creator of “The White Lotus,” know that he sets his stories amid the privileged, contrasting entitlement with characters on lower economic rungs. This Mike White work is similar yet more pointed. Rochester-born John Lithgow portrays an uber-wealthy developer who, over a dinner, exchanges barbs with a working-class immigrant, portrayed by Salma Hayek. This could have fallen into one-dimensional messaging but offers nuance and depth.
