Accessible Approach/Entrance

  • Accessible entrance in back of Planetarium
  • Route of travel is slip resistant and at least 36” wide
  • Objects can be detected by person with visual disability using a cane
  • Curbs have curb cuts at drives, parking, and drop off for entrance south of Planetarium


  • Slope of ramp no greater than 1:12
  • Railings on both sides
  • Width between railings at least 36”

Parking and Drop-Off Areas

  • 2 accessible parking spaces available with 8’ wide access aisle
  • Accessible spaces closest to accessible entrance on proper route
  • Access aisles for van accessible spaces marked with hash marks
  • Outdoor parking lot so no need for vertical clearance for vans
  • Drop off location in lot (out of traffic) for paratransit user with accessible path to the entrance
  • Accessible space marked with International Symbol of Accessibility


  • Accessible entrance in back of Planetarium (south entrance)
    • No stairs with ramped sidewalk to entrance
    • Push button ADA control doors – no higher than 48” and can be operated independently with a closed fist or 5 pounds or less pressure
  • Entrance door has at least 32” of clear opening with more than 18” of clear wall on the pull side of door, next to handle
  • Threshold edge is accessible (1/4” high or less)

Rooms and Spaces

  • Aisles and pathways to materials and services at least 36” wide in the lobby
  • 5’ space for turning a wheelchair completely
  • Obstacles are cane-detectable in circulation paths through public areas

Seats, Tables, and Counters

  • Wheelchair seating distributed throughout space – theater seats are lightweight and moveable as patron requires
  • Companion seating available
  • Seats do not have moveable/removable armrests
  • Accessible counters for tickets with a 36” wide section and area of free space in front of more than 30” x 48”
  • No concessions or water fountain


No elevator - venue has only one level


  • Accessible restrooms with pictograms used to identify restrooms
  • Doorway to restroom is at least 32” clear – no doors into the main restroom entrances
  • Adequate maneuvering space for a person using a wheelchair (approximately 5’ diameter clear space to make turns)
  • 36” wide path to all fixtures
  • Stall doors operable with a closed fist inside and out
  • Accessible stall with grab bars behind and on the side of wall nearest to the toilet
  • Toilet seat less than 19” high
  • Faucet operable with closed fist
  • Soap and paper towel dispensers not higher than 44”
